Seymour 40'th High Peak Ascent

Seymour Mountain
The 34'th highest peak in New York State with elevations of 4,120 ft.

Seymour – Climbed with my buddy Paul and his son Peter on Sunday 10-11-15. We planned this hike for the last of the year and over Columbus day weekend since we had off from school/work. We spent Saturday in Speculator and then on Sunday got up early and drove to the Corey’s Road parking area. We arrived around 7:20 AM and set out right away.

There was a slight chance of rain in the forecast, and it was overcast with mild temperatures, but otherwise a perfect fall hiking day. The leaves had changed color and many had already fallen to the ground.

The first several miles were mostly flat and over easy foot trails. One hint make sure that at the fork in the road you take the foot trail not the horse trail.

Others have described making this mistake. As you hike in there are a lot of signs posted to your left to stay on the trail and do not meander off on to private property. Later another hiker told us this land is owned by the Rockefellar family. We reached the heard path split at 9:30 and started off to the right after the cairn and along the brook. The split is right after crossing a bridge and past both the Blueberry Brook and Ward Brook lean-tos. As expected the elevation started from this point and continued to the summit. What we didn’t expect was how muddy and boggy this first section was.

Usually the boggy sections, if any, are at the col not on the incline. Peter tried first to navigate through the bog but after he lost a shoe Paul and I decided to take another route.

Eventually we all got through with our boots on and continued up the ascent to the summit. From the cairn to the summit took us about two hours and we were at the summit around 11:30.

On the summit it was a bit windy but not too cold and the fall foliage was out in brilliant colors. We hung out on the summit for about a half your and then started back down at about noon.

Our descent was a about fifteen minutes faster than the ascent and we reached the herd path cairn at about 1:45 PM. From there on out we knew was pretty flat so it was just putting one foot in front of the other back to the car. We then drove back to Speculator and after getting cleaned up and a change of clothes we went to Melody Lodge for dinner. Our son Nathan was actually in town after working at Deerfoot Lodge for the Columbus Day work weekend so we met him for dinner. We had to wait quite a long time to eat but as usual it was worth it. Melody is one of our favorite places to eat, especially in the Adirondacks. Overall this was a great hike with good friends. Because of the mostly flat start and finish I think this mountain was toward the easier side of the spectrum of hikes I have done so far. It was and very exciting because I was able to end the year at an even forty. Only six more to go!
